A steel drinking surface is only one part of the fountain
Ask which part is stainless steel
“Stainless steel fountain” can describe the surface where a cat drinks while the reservoir and filter holder remain plastic. That is useful information, but it is not an all-metal construction claim. Start by identifying the drinking top, tank, filter support, water outlet and moving wet parts individually.
A steel top can be the exact feature you want
The Catit PIXI with stainless steel top, 43720 specifies a steel drinking cover and dishwasher permission for that cover. Its body is a separate component. The Stainless Steel Flower 43725 similarly pairs a steel top with a plastic reservoir. Choose either for the documented drinking surface, rather than assuming the inside has changed to the same material.
The PIXI Smart 43751 adds connected controls to its own configuration. Its component-specific washing instructions cover the steel cover and lower top, while the body remains a different cleaning job. An app and UV-C feature do not change that material map.
Check the wet parts beneath the visible surface
The Dockstream 2 models combine a steel drinking tray with an ABS tank. A detachable tank can reduce the work of carrying water past a cord, but a wet rotor still circulates the water. The new Catit Easy Clean 43621 likewise places the motor in the base and uses a magnetic impeller in the wet assembly. Its “pumpless” description refers to the reservoir design, not to water moving without a mechanism.
Look at the disassembly drawing before purchase. Ask whether the tray separates from its plastic support, whether a rotor or pump cover can be removed as instructed, and which small pieces must go back in a particular position. The easiest-looking top is only one part of the cleaning routine.
Dishwasher-safe needs a named component
Do not transfer the permission for a steel top to a reservoir, base or pump. Do not assume a general statement applies to a part that cannot be separated from plastic. On the Dockstream 2, current product-page tray language conflicts with the exact US manual's broader dishwasher prohibition. Our assessments retain that uncertainty instead of promising dishwasher cleaning.
The older PLWF115 also has conflicting page and manual language. Obtain clarification for the supplied edition if dishwasher use is essential. In the meantime, follow the applicable hand-cleaning instructions and keep electrical components out of an improvised wash cycle.
Turn a material preference into a workable choice
If a steel drinking surface is the goal, shortlist the models that expressly provide one. Then compare their actual cleaning access, power mode and replacement parts. If you require a fully stainless tank or water path, a steel-top label is insufficient evidence.
Surface material alone does not establish a medical benefit, a measured hygiene result or freedom from cleaning. Choose the documented component and a routine you can maintain. The care guide connects those parts to the model-specific maintenance instructions.
