Choose a configuration
PetSafe Water Station: choose Small, Medium or Large
PetSafe’s Healthy Pet Water Station makes a different trade from a powered fountain: it uses gravity to replenish a stainless-steel bowl from a BPA-free plastic reservoir, with no plug or pump. The current US size choices are Small at 0.5 gallon (2 L), Medium at 1 gallon (4 L), and Large at 2.5 gallons (9.5 L). Pick between those configurations by capacity and handling, then decide whether a gravity-fed bowl is actually the water presentation your cat needs.
Compare the three actual sizes
- Small, PFD17-11854: the half-gallon reservoir is the least water to lift and refill, and the smallest listed capacity. It is the best place to start if you want a simple bowl system and a lower storage volume.
- Medium, PFD17-11855: one gallon doubles the Small’s listed capacity. Consider it when the Small seems undersized but a 2.5-gallon tank would be awkward.
- Large, PFD17-11856: 2.5 gallons is the most storage, but also the most reservoir to move, invert and lock. Make sure the physical refill routine is comfortable before choosing only by the largest number.
These are maker-published nominal capacities. The Small, Medium and Large are not different flow technologies, drinking-bowl materials or app packages. The stainless-steel bowl and plastic reservoir remain the basic design across all sizes. PetSafe provides a size chart estimating refill intervals for selected pet weights, but a chart cannot predict an individual cat’s drinking, spillage, ambient conditions or how much usable water remains. Keep checking the bowl and reservoir rather than converting a nominal capacity into an unattended schedule.
Gravity is not continuous circulation
When a cat drinks, the mechanical flow-control valve lets more water enter the bowl. There is no circulating stream and nothing to charge. This can suit a cat that accepts a standing bowl, or a home that wants to avoid a pump cord. It will disappoint a cat that seeks a bubbling stream, and it should not be matched to requirements for sensor flow, timed circulation or a rechargeable fountain. In the finder, choose the gravity supply and gravity-refill mode if that is the essential arrangement. If water movement matters, compare a true powered model instead; an optional filter does not turn this station into a circulating fountain.
Use the filter only if you want it
The station’s supplied parts are the reservoir, bowl and flow-control valve. The Healthy Pet Water Filter is optional and sold separately. The manufacturer’s assembly instructions require a new filter to be rinsed until its water runs clear and shaken gently; the flow-control cap is unplugged when the filter is installed and plugged when no filter is used. PetSafe instructs owners to rinse an in-use filter with cold water and replace it every six to eight weeks. Those steps are extra consumable care, not proof that every supplied package includes a cartridge or that the cartridge removes every contaminant.
Plan the lift, fill and wash sequence
The refill routine means handling the reservoir rather than pouring into the open bowl: unlock it, take it off the base, unscrew the cap, refill, tighten the cap and turn the reservoir over using both hands. Line the unlock mark up with the base arrow and rotate a quarter turn to secure it. PetSafe recommends a level surface and describes checking the cap, filter arrangement and reservoir lock when troubleshooting a leak or bowl that will not refill. The Large deserves particular attention to whether a full lift and turn is manageable; the Medium can be a useful compromise, while the Small reduces the amount to move.
PetSafe says to hand-wash the components with mild dish soap and rinse well; its cleaning article permits dishwasher use at low or no heat, and its product listing specifies top-rack safety. Use the top rack on a low/no-heat setting for washable parts, and remove the optional filter before washing. Do not confuse easier cleaning with no cleaning. The stainless bowl is the drinking surface, while the reservoir, valve and plastic support also need regular attention. The filter itself follows its separate cold-water rinse and replacement routine.
Make the shortlist around the cat, not the label
Choose among the sizes only after confirming that gravity-fed replenishment is acceptable. If your household needs outlet-powered continuous flow, compare a pump fountain such as PetSafe’s Outlast or the Seaside Stainless; those designs have their own maintenance and outage tradeoffs. The Water Station is a bowl-and-reservoir system: helpful when that is the point, a poor match when your essential need is active water circulation.
