A useful fit for

The largest gravity-fed reserve in this family for households that want a replenished stainless bowl without a pump or electrical supply and have room to handle its full reservoir.

The main tradeoff

The 2.5-gallon tank is physically the largest choice and requires a careful two-handed lift and turn to refill. Larger capacity does not eliminate regular water checks, washing or valve care.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I require a stainless drinking bowl, a dishwasher-permitted drinking surface, gravity refill, no plug and at least 1.5 liters of nominal capacity?

Yes. This size is documented with a stainless bowl, gravity refill, no plug and the maker’s rounded metric reservoir label. Remove the optional filter before cleaning; top-rack/low-heat dishwasher permission is not permission for the filter cartridge.

Can I require outlet-powered continuous circulation from this station?

No. It has a gravity valve and no plug or pump; it replenishes the bowl but does not circulate water.

Can I require a minimum capacity of 10 liters?

No. PetSafe labels this configuration 2.5 gallon (9.5 liters); its nominal label is below the selected minimum and it does not promise usable volume or days between checks.

The Large PetSafe Healthy Pet Water Station is the 2.5-gallon member of the PFD17 family, exact model PFD17-11856. It uses gravity to refill a removable stainless-steel bowl from a BPA-free plastic reservoir. There is no plug or powered pump. This distinction is central to the buying decision: the Large supplies a bigger reserve in a familiar bowl layout, not a long-running stream or filter-pump combination.

More stored water, more to handle

PetSafe lists the Large capacity as 2.5 gallons and gives a rounded metric label of 9.5 liters. That is the most reserve of the Small, Medium and Large choices, so it is the logical one to examine when more than one animal drinks from the same place or when you want to refill the reservoir less often than a smaller format might require. Those examples are about choosing capacity, not a measured promise of days. Actual use depends on the animals and room, and a large filled reservoir still requires regular bowl checks and cleaning.

The larger nominal capacity also makes refilling a more substantial handling task. PetSafe instructs users to grip the reservoir at its narrow waist, flip it using both hands and rotate it into the locked position. If lifting a filled tank, getting it level and setting it down without a spill would be awkward, the Large is not necessarily the convenient choice even if its capacity number looks attractive. Compare the one-gallon Medium before assuming that maximum volume is best.

Steel where the pet drinks; plastic in the reservoir

PetSafe identifies the water-contact bowl as stainless steel and the reservoir as BPA-free plastic. Its Large product image shows the tall translucent reservoir and a separate bowl below it. This is the official image associated with the Large variant, but the animal and perspective are not a ruler; use manufacturer specifications rather than the image to estimate volume. The manufacturer does not state whether this image is studio photography or a rendering, so it is described only as a product image. If the request is a stainless drinking surface, the Large has a documented fit. If the requirement is a steel reservoir or an entirely metal water path, it does not.

Water flows into the bowl as it is consumed. There is no circulation, motor, filter pump, app or rechargeable battery in this setup. An optional Healthy Pet Water Filter is sold separately and is used in the reservoir cap; PetSafe describes the cartridge as helping with sediment and odor, not as a reason to skip cleaning. Set the flow-control cap differently depending on whether the optional filter is installed. Rinse a new filter under cold water until clear and shake it gently. If water does not refill, check that the Large has been filled and locked correctly, and check filter and cap placement.

Care is more than choosing the largest reservoir

Before use, wash the parts that touch water. On refill day, unlock the reservoir, remove and drain it, open the cap, fill it, then tighten the cap before turning the filled unit over with both hands. Align the unlock mark and rotate clockwise one-quarter turn to secure it. PetSafe also recommends a flat, level surface. These steps help prevent an avoidable spill, but they do not guarantee a leak-free or maintenance-free household routine.

For cleaning, remove any optional filter, wash the station components with mild dish soap and rinse thoroughly. The support article says dishwasher-safe with low or no heat and the current shop page calls the station top-rack safe. Use the top rack with a low/no-heat cycle for compatible pieces, not for the filter cartridge. PetSafe says to rinse an in-use cartridge with cold water and replace it every six to eight weeks. Regular cleaning is still important at this capacity; a tall reserve can look full while the accessible bowl, valve or other surfaces need attention.

Who benefits from the Large?

Choose it if you want a pump-free station with PetSafe's highest listed capacity, a stainless-steel bowl, indoor use and enough physical space to set down and turn the filled reservoir. A cat household may value the bigger reserve without requiring any electric feature, but the 2.5-gallon label alone does not tell you how often to inspect it. If the station's size or the lift-and-turn refill is a concern, the smaller half-gallon Small or one-gallon Medium may be easier to handle.

Do not select the Large to satisfy a requirement for continuous circulation, a sensing stream or a battery-powered fountain. It meets a gravity-fed requirement instead. A true pumped model such as the Seaside Stainless offers continuous bubbling but has a submerged pump and a different cleaning routine. Compare water presentation, not just reservoir size: the Large is for replenishing a bowl without power, and it should remain out of any shortlist whose essential condition is moving water.

Key details at a glance

Reservoir and capacity limitsPetSafe lists a 2.5-gallon reservoir and rounds this size to 9.5 liters on its sizing chart. The numeric matcher uses the manufacturer label; nominal capacity is not a measured usable volume or a refill-time promise.
Power arrangementNo plug or electric pump is used. Gravity feeds the removable stainless-steel bowl from a BPA-free plastic reservoir; this is not a rechargeable fountain.
Water flow and conditionsA gravity flow-control valve replenishes the bowl as water is used. There is no active circulation, pet-approach sensor, timed circulation mode or powered water stream.
Drinking surface and wet partsThe removable drinking bowl is stainless steel. PetSafe identifies the reservoir as BPA-free plastic; the supplied water path is not all steel.
Cleaning and source limitationsPetSafe says to wash parts with mild dish soap, rinse thoroughly and use a low/no-heat dishwasher cycle; the current retail page says top-rack safe. Remove the optional cartridge before washing. Rinse the cartridge in cold water and replace it every 6–8 weeks.
App and observation limitsNo app controls, drinking-event data, pet identification or Wi-Fi are documented for this mechanical gravity station.
